Fact of the day: Did you know that sound travels 4.3 times faster in water than in air? This is because water molecules are packed much closer together than air molecules. This means that when sound waves move through water, the molecules can quickly pass the vibrations from one to another. In air, the molecules are farther apart, so it takes longer for the sound to travel from one molecule to the next. Even at the same temperature, the density and structure of water make it easier for sound to move, which is why it travels faster in water.
