Guyana’s 140-Member Contingent Set for the 2025 Inter-Gu-Oiana Games

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has finalized a 140-member team to participate in the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG), set for October 24-26, 2025, in Cayenne, French Guiana. This contingent includes athletes, officials, and auxiliary personnel across seven disciplines: athletics, basketball, beach volleyball, chess, futsal, swimming, and table tennis. The IGG Management Committee, led by Chef-de-Mission Dr. Karen Pilgrim, has been working with French authorities to secure the necessary travel documents. Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle emphasized the cultural importance of the tournament and Guyana’s ambition to host the 2025 edition. This year’s games will bring together athletes from Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana, continuing a tradition that started in 1967.

  

Nicolette Fernandes Appointed Chair of Women in Sport Commission

Nicolette Fernandes has been appointed as Chair of the Women in Sport Commission, which will serve from September 2024 to 2026. Other members include Vice-Chair Denise Jeffrey, General Secretary Dacia Cummings, and members Sileena Arjune, Ashley Khalil, and Ayanna Wickham-Watson. The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) ratified this commission to promote and enhance female participation in sports at all levels in Guyana. The commission will work to empower women as athletes, coaches, leaders, and volunteers, with a focus on gender parity.

  

200 Children with Disabilities to Benefit from Swimming Pool Donation

Two hundred children living with disabilities will have the chance to learn swimming thanks to the newly commissioned Edward Mohamed Swimming Pool at the Regional Special Education Needs and Disability Diagnostic and Treatment Centre. This facility, located at Cyril Potter College of Education, was made possible by a donation from Trinidadian philanthropist Teddy Mohamed.Minister of Education Priya Manickchand emphasized the pool’s importance for boosting the confidence and development of differently-abled children. The government plans to replicate this initiative in other regions and ensure the necessary personnel, such as lifeguards, are trained for safety.

  

CPL 2024 Final: Tahir and du Plessis Lead the Charge in South African Veteran Clash

Guyana Amazon Warriors are one step away from securing back-to-back titles in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024. Led by 45-year-old Imran Tahir, the first overseas bowler to reach 100 wickets in CPL history, the Warriors are set to face the St Lucia Kings, captained by Faf du Plessis, in the final. Tahir has recovered from an injury to lead a formidable spin attack, while du Plessis, 40, has had his most prolific CPL season with 384 runs. Both veterans bring years of experience, and their leadership will be critical in this high-stakes clash. The final promises an intense battle between two talented sides aiming for the CPL title.
